Field Maple
The UK’s only native maple is widely planted in gardens and parks due to its compact habit and rich autumn colour. The bark is light brown and flaky, and twigs are slender and brown which then develop a corky bark with age. Small, grey leaf buds grow on long stems. The leaves are small, dark green/red and shiny with five lobes and rounded teeth. They fade to a rich golden yellow before falling in autumn. The flowers are small, yellow-green, cup-shaped and hang in clusters. These develop into large, winged fruits in autumn which are then dispersed by the wind. Likes most soils and positions including coastal, chalky and exposed sites but is not suited to full shade.
Approx. size: 40-60cm.
