Description
ARONIA melanocarpa Hugin
A new Swedish selection of Aronia, Hugin is a small and compact multi-stemmed deciduous shrub, making it perfect for small gardens or container growing. Oval-shaped glossy green leaves provide a backdrop to clusters of fragrant white flowers in May, and these are followed by an abundance of small purple-black berries that ripen in late autumn. The fruit is too sharp to eat raw, but when cooked, has a rich distinctive taste. Like blackcurrants the berries are very high in vitamin C and can be used in much the same way including: jams, jellies, compotes, crumbles and pies! The foliage provides excellent interest in Autumn by turning shades of vibrant red and orange. This plant enjoys a sunny or partial shady spot and is best planted in well draining soil although shallow chalky soils are to be avoided. It can also be grown well in a pot.
- Cropping: September – October.
- Height and Spread: 2m x 2m.
- Plant 2m apart.
This plant is supplied pot grown in a 3L pot
