Description
BERBERIS thunbergii atropurpurea
Japanese Barberry
Berberis thunbergii atropurpurea (Purple Berberis) is a striking deciduous dwarf shrub with a compact and bush habit making it ideal for a low hedge. The spiny stems bear dramatic purplish-red, oval shaped leaves which become brighter and more vibrant in autumn. In the spring and summer, yellow flowers are borne which stand out wonderfully against the velvet-like purple foliage. The flowers are closely followed by deep orange berries that eventually turn scarlet red and provide a welcome treat for wildlife. Berberis is a perfect intruder deterrent whilst at the same time providing a safe haven for birds and small animals. Tough and easy to grow hedging plants that will do well in virtually any soil and situation including coastal, though they do like sun or partial shade.
