Description

CARPINUS betulus
European Hornbeam

A native species, similar in appearance to Beech.  The European Hornbeam is one of the most popular varieties of hedging shrub, suitable for both formal and country barriers.  Come spring, Hornbeam will yield a densely packed covering of glossy deeply veined green leaves, also producing delicate catkins later in the year for added interest.  A dense and vigorous grower, it will successfully retain its copper brown leaves in their dry state throughout the winter and will grow to a mature height of three metres which ensures year-round privacy for your garden as well as reliable shelter for wildlife during the colder months.  Hornbeam excels in poorer conditions so if you are planting with limitations such as shade, clay/wet soils or windy sites then this may be the right hedge for you.  While it makes an exceptional single species hedge it also shines when combined with other species.
