Description

CRATAEGUS monogyna
Quickthorn/Hawthorn

Hawthorn, also known as Quickthorn, makes an attractive traditional native hedgerow.  According to the Woodland Trust, it is the second most advantageous plant for wildlife, beaten only by English Oak.  The bright green foliage is tinged with red and heralds the arrival of spring.  Produces an abundant and spectacular display of white scented blossom in the spring that are highly attractive to bees and insects.  These are then followed by shiny, red haws when autumn arrives which sustain a multitude of native birds.  The sharp thorns that adorn the branches make Hawthorn a great intruder deterrent, whilst providing a safe place for birds to roost and nest.  A versatile plant that can be left bushy or trimmed neatly depending on your desired look.  Renowned for its robust, hardy nature making it a particularly effective choice in exposed or coastal environments where it can withstand harsh winds and temperatures.  Suitable for all soil types and all sites other than dense shade or very wet soils.
