Description

ROSA rugosa
Ramanus Rose

Rosa rugosa is a wild rose which produces richly scented, large open single flowers in mid-summer.  The leaves are lush, glossy, dark green and crinkly with a downy underneath, these turn a butter yellow colour in autumn.  The attractive flowers turn to large rose hips that stand out boldly against green foliage and provide autumnal interest.  These hips are the largest of any wild rose and provide a much needed food source for birds.  A boisterous, incredibly resilient variety of rose, commonly grown as a flowering hedge which can also act as an effective security barrier due to its dense habit and thorny stems.  It has to be said that Rosa Rugosa has a shaggy, unkempt look, though this arguably contributes to its charm and can be easily managed with trimming.  Though best grown in full sun with well-drained soil, is also tolerant of poorer soil and shade and makes a perfect screen for coastal gardens due to its ability to withstand harsh weather conditions.
