ASPARAGUS officinalis Stewarts Purple
The latest variety of purple asparagus, this F1 hybrid is significantly sweeter than the green varieties, producing an abundance of upright purple spears of medium thickness with closed purple tips. The spears have a low fibre content thereby making them particularly tender – even when eaten raw – so are ideal for a colourful and tasty additional to salads! Excellent when cooked and will retain its colour when steamed. Commercial trials have shown this variety to out-yield many of the green varieties. Crops mid to late season. Self fertile.
3 litre stock will be supplied pot grown where possible.
Bare root stock is available for dispatch between late October & late March. Orders can be placed in advance at any time, just bear in mind that payment will be taken in full at time of ordering. Please be aware the bare root asparagus is sold in outers of 5 crowns.
Asparagus grows best in light, well-drained soil, sheltered from cold winds. On heavy soils it is recommended using a raised bed containing plenty of well-rotted compost to ensure healthy growth. Plant 38cm (15in) apart.
Allow the crowns to develop by not cropping the first year. Feed in the spring with a general purpose fertiliser. Cut foliage back almost to ground level in autumn and apply a mulch of compost.
