RIBES rubrum REDCURRANT Jonkheer Van Tet

This early modern Dutch variety is one of the earliest cultivars.  It is strong growing and consistently produces heavy yields of large juicy fruit that hang on long trusses for easy picking.  The currants are juicy and have an excellent flavour so it’s no wonder that they are rated very highly by enthusiasts and growers alike.  This variety does best when grown as a cordon.  Eventual height: 1.8m (6ft).  Eventual spread: 1.5m (5ft).  Cropping season: early July.  Self fertile.

3 litre stock will be supplied pot grown where possible.

Bare root stock is available for dispatch between late October & late March. Orders can be placed in advance at any time, just bear in mind that payment will be taken in full at time of ordering.

Planting:

Plant 1.5m (5ft) apart in rows 1.5m (5ft) apart.

Plant in an open sunny or partly shaded north facing wall/fence sheltered from frost and strong winds.  Prefers a slightly acid, moist but well-drained fertile soil.  Soak the root-ball before planting.  Plant in a hole twice the diameter of the root-ball or pot.  Mix an organic soil improver and general fertiliser with the infill soil.  Water regularly until established.

After Care:

Fruit is produced on the previous year’s growth and older shoots.  Cut back the main branches by one-half after planting.  Create a framework of 8-10 branches.  Each Winter from year 3, shorten main shoots by one-half.  Apply a general fertiliser in Spring.
